The Penang Hill Funicular is the only one of its kind in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Since its opening in 1924, this tunnel, which is among the steepest in the world, has welcomed over 47 million visitors from both domestic and international travellers, local communities and residents.

In conjunction with Penang Hill Railway Centenary Celebration (1923-2023), this special stamp issue commemorates the railway’s remarkable century-long journey by featuring funiculars from three generations which are First-Generation Funicular – 1923 (30sen), Second-Generation Funicular - 1977 (60sen) and Third-Generation Funicular - 2011 (RM 1.30). The latest generation funicular is also featured on the Miniature Sheet (RM5).
